How to Use It

  1. Total your quarter's miles and fuel gallons across all jurisdictions.
  2. Enter the miles driven and gallons purchased in one state.
  3. Enter that state's current IFTA diesel rate from iftach.org.
  4. Repeat for every state and add up the results for your return.

The Formula

MPG = Total miles ÷ Total gallons | Taxable gal = State miles ÷ MPG | Net = (Taxable − Purchased) × Rate

Frequently Asked Questions

How is IFTA calculated?

Your fleet MPG is calculated for the quarter. Miles in each state ÷ MPG gives taxable gallons. You owe that state's rate on taxable gallons, minus tax already paid at the pump there.

When is IFTA due?

Quarterly: April 30, July 31, October 31, and January 31.

Where do I find IFTA tax rates?

Current rates are published each quarter by the IFTA clearinghouse at iftach.org. This calculator is an estimate — always file using official rates.
