Fuel Surcharge Calculator

Make sure fuel swings are billed, not eaten.

A fuel surcharge (FSC) passes diesel price increases above an agreed base price on to the shipper. Use the DOE national average diesel price for the current week as your current price.

Fuel surcharge per mile

$0.433

Total fuel surcharge

$433.33

How to Use It

  1. Look up this week's DOE national average on-highway diesel price.
  2. Enter the base/peg price from your contract (often $1.20–$1.25).
  3. Enter the MPG from the contract (commonly 6).
  4. Multiply by loaded miles for the total surcharge on the load.

The Formula

FSC per mile = (Current diesel − Base price) ÷ MPG | Total FSC = FSC per mile × Miles

Frequently Asked Questions

How is fuel surcharge calculated in trucking?

Subtract the base price from the current diesel price, then divide by the agreed MPG. That gives surcharge per mile, which is multiplied by loaded miles.

Where does the current diesel price come from?

Most contracts use the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA/DOE) weekly national average on-highway diesel price, published every Monday.

Do spot loads include fuel surcharge?

Spot rates are usually all-in, meaning fuel is built into the rate. That's why knowing your fuel cost per mile matters when negotiating.
